About KiwiBudget and Bryder
KiwiBudget is a New Zealand budgeting app, built in Invercargill. It connects to New Zealand banks read-only through Akahu, builds a budget around your real pay cycle, and tracks bills, goals and KiwiSaver in New Zealand dollars. It launches on iOS and Android on 16 November 2026.
KiwiBudget Limited is owned by Bryder Holdings Ltd (Bryder Group), a small company that builds and runs its own businesses from the bottom of the South Island. We design, build and support everything core in-house, and we plan for the long term.
The role
KiwiBudget is a React app that runs on the web and, through Capacitor, on iOS and Android, with Supabase and Postgres behind it. Once people use it every day, one of the most useful things we can do is fix what goes wrong, quickly and carefully.
You will take bug reports from the help desk, work out what is really happening, fix it, write a test so it stays fixed, and help ship the release. It suits someone who likes getting to the bottom of things, and who doesn't mind when the answer is one line.
What you'll do
- Reproduce and triage bug reports from Bryder Connect, our help desk, and agree with Jack what to fix first.
- Fix bugs across the web and mobile app, in React, Vite, Capacitor, TypeScript and JavaScript.
- Track down data problems in Supabase and Postgres, including row level security, database functions and edge functions.
- Write a test for each fix, and add tests where the gaps are.
- Make the small improvements you notice along the way: clearer error messages, faster screens, tidier code.
- Prepare careful releases: check changes on real phones, write plain release notes, and help with App Store and Google Play builds.
- Explain each fix to support in plain words, so they can tell the customer what happened.
What you'll bring
- Experience with React and JavaScript or TypeScript, from work, study or your own projects, that you can show us or talk us through.
- A patient, methodical approach to debugging: you reproduce a problem before you change anything.
- Comfort with SQL and a relational database.
- Git, and the habit of small, clear commits.
- Care for privacy. You will work close to people's financial information and treat it with respect.
- The right to work in New Zealand.
Nice to have
- Supabase, Postgres row level security or Deno edge functions.
- Capacitor, or building and debugging iOS and Android apps in Xcode or Android Studio.
- Testing tools such as Vitest, Testing Library or Playwright.
- Experience with payments (Stripe, RevenueCat) or bank data such as Akahu.
- An eye for accessibility.
How we work
- Remote, anywhere in New Zealand. Work from home or wherever suits you, as long as you are based in New Zealand.
- Part-time, 20 hours a week, on New Zealand time. The hours are flexible within the working week. We agree a regular pattern together, with enough overlap for calls and questions.
- Small and direct. You report to Jack Ridder, the founder, and work with him day to day. Decisions are quick, and your work is seen.
- Honest with people's money. No hype and no pressure. KiwiBudget doesn't give financial advice, and neither do we, in anything we write or say.
- Equipment: having your own laptop and a reliable internet connection is a plus, but not essential.
Pay and benefits
- $38 an hour, before tax. At 20 hours a week that is $760 a week, before tax.
- KiwiSaver: if you are a member, we add 3.5% of your gross pay on top. That is the legal minimum for employers since 1 April 2026.
- Annual leave: four weeks' paid leave a year after your first 12 months, as the Holidays Act gives.
- Sick leave: 10 days' paid sick leave a year once you have been with us for six months. Unused days carry over, up to 20.
- Public holidays: paid when they fall on a day you would normally work.
- Other leave: bereavement leave and family violence leave, as the law gives.
New leave laws are due to start in 2028. When they do, your leave follows them.
