Microsoft 365 help
Sign-in trouble, multi-factor authentication, Outlook, Teams and files. Most of it you can fix yourself in about two minutes. What you cannot, log below.
Quick links
All of these are Microsoft's own sites. You sign in with your work account.
Common fixes
Worth two minutes before logging a request.
My password is not being accepted
- Check you are using your full work address, name@ridder.nz, not just the part before the @.
- Try Outlook on the web. If it works there, the problem is the app on your machine, not the account.
- Reset it at passwordreset.microsoftonline.com.
Repeated failures lock the account for a short period. If reset does not work, or you have no recovery method on file, log a request rather than trying again.
Approval prompts have stopped arriving, or I have a new phone
Sign in at mysignins.microsoft.com and add the new device before you wipe the old one. That page is where methods are added, removed and reordered.
If the old phone is already gone and you cannot get in at all, log a request. Nobody can approve it from this end without establishing who you are first.
Outlook is not sending or receiving
- Check Microsoft's service status first.
- Open Outlook on the web. Mail arriving there but not in the app means the app is stuck, not the mailbox.
- In the desktop app, check Send / Receive and make sure Work Offline is off.
- Quit Outlook completely and reopen it. On a Mac that is Cmd+Q, not just closing the window.
A mailbox that is completely full also stops receiving. The web version will tell you if that is the case.
Nobody can hear me in Teams
- In the meeting, open device settings and check the selected microphone is the one you are talking into. A connected headset often steals the default.
- Check the operating system has given Teams microphone permission. This is the usual culprit on macOS after an update, under Privacy and Security.
- Try the meeting in a browser. If you are audible there, restart the desktop app.
A file or folder has gone missing
Almost nothing is ever actually gone. Check in this order:
- The recycle bin in the SharePoint site or OneDrive it lived in. Deleted items sit there for 93 days.
- Version history, if it was overwritten rather than deleted. Right click, then Version history.
- Whether it moved rather than vanished. Search by filename across all of OneDrive instead of browsing to where you expect it.
If it was in a shared library and is in neither recycle bin, log it promptly. Recovery gets harder the longer it is left.
I need access to a shared mailbox, site or licence
Access is granted, not requested from Microsoft. Log a request with the exact name of the mailbox, site or app, and say what you need to do with it. Read-only and full access are different grants, and the narrower one is usually right.
I think I clicked something I should not have
Say so straight away. There is no version of this where reporting it early makes things worse, and every hour of delay makes it harder to contain.
- Change your password now at passwordreset.microsoftonline.com.
- Deny any approval prompts you did not start.
- Email hello@ridder.nz with what happened and roughly when. Do not delete the message, it is useful evidence.
Log a request
The more of this you fill in, the less back and forth it takes.
